Improvement of stability of coal faces by the development of a comprehensive system for monitoring and control of powered roof support operation, including not only technical requirements as regards longwall advace, but also safe roof maintenance is the main project objectivee. This objective will be met through realization of the following activities:
- Development of the modular Shield Support Monitoring System (SSMS), which will include geometry parameters of shield support, hydraulic pressure parameters, tip to face distance as well as new wireless communication system.
- Development of the Longwall Mining Conditions Prediction System (LMCPS) – method and software for analysis of data delivered by the Shield Support Monitoring System (SSMS), in the aspect of strains in the roof.
- Development of the method to improve the stability of coal faces with solid roof strata. Determination of set of dimensioning rules, hitherto unavailable, will lead to improved safety levels and increased equipment effectiveness and this will ultimately increase cost efficiency.
- Numerical modelling of shield support behaviour and rock mass behaviour based on the historical data and data from SSMS.
- Improve understanding of stress distributions, longwall closure and roof fall / roof caving mechanisms.
- Correlate the historical processed measurement data with categorised damage events.
- Underground tests of Shield Support Monitoring System and monitoring of shield support performance.
