SSMS-S sensor is used to measure the distance between the shield support canopy and the longwall face. The sensor enclosure is made of stainless steel. Its design is suitable for installation on a dedicated shield support. Ultrasound was used for measurements. It has its own power supply source. These are two batteries of the same type as in a SSMS-C unit. The measuring distance of the sensor is about 5 m.
